I had great difficulty getting through this book. It did not take me long to read, but I found myself having to take breaks from it. I feel that this book could have been edited. I found much of the interaction between John's family to be irritating and purposefully strung out. I cannot put my finger on it exactly, but their completely lack of communication, which results in the intensifying of the suspense, seems more forced than natural. That frustrates me. Koontz was in true form, however, doing a great job of emphasizing the utter evil of the enemy. At times it was necessary for me to break from the book because the evil was so entirely disgusting and overwhelming that I could not continue. While it does work on a certain level, it makes it very hard for me to read. This book reminded me of Intensity because the perspective of the villain is delved into; Koontz attempts to clearly enumerate the thought patterns of the nefarious spirit. This particular attention is two sided- it shows the villain for who he is, but also, as is my case, disgusted me greatly. I understand that is what Koontz wanted to do, but I felt that he went overboard. He was successful very quickly in the story of getting this across, and it felt, as the plot continued, almost monotonous and overbearing. His writing style, however, is superb.

Unmemorable. That said, I think it was enjoyable enough while I was reading. Since studying education is a "thing" of mine, I found it lacking in any sort of grander takeaways. The whole "the system is broken thing" is a little overdone.
