Fındık Çiçek Açınca
(Decided to read this book because it is nominated for a RITA and repped by agent, Kristin Nelson.) I'll give it 3.5 stars. It started off strong. In the first ten pages, we learn that the hero and heroine have been married but living on separate continents for ten years, since the day they married. The heroine, Gigi, decides finally to file for divorce. This action brings her husband, Camden, back to London where he tells her he'll only divorce her if she gives him an heir. It was this encounter which made me think I'd love this book. Her ears rang. "Surely you jest. You want an heir from me? Now?" "I couldn't stand the thought of bedding you before now." "Really?" She laughed, though she'd have preferred to smash an inkwell against his temple. "You liked it well enough last time." "The performance of a lifetime," he said easily. "And I was a good thespian to begin with." Ouch. In the confrontation, it was obvious Gigi and Camden had deeply loved each other, but *something* happened to make Camden leave the day after they were married. I read the book to find out what that something was. When I finally learned what Gigi did, I didn't feel like it was worth this ten year estrangement. After about fifty pages, I began skimming large portions of the book. There was a side story going on about Gigi's mother, Victoria, and a love interest. I didn't feel like that story had ANY impact on Gigi's story so I began to skip whole chapters when Victoria was the POV character. I don't feel like I missed a thing. Honestly, it feels like the Victoria chapters were included to make the book longer. Speaking of making the book longer, the last hundred pages could have been chopped off. We came to the point where Camden and Gigi both realized the other still loved them. Camden wanted to renew their relationship, but Gigi refused because she's stubborn and stupid. Okay, the real reason was because she's trying to "do the right thing", but whatever. She's not ever been a do-the-right-thing type of gal, so why start *now*? Anyway, a very interesting premise but the book didn't live up to its first ten pages, IMO.

Dick's final book and the least thematically linked part of the VALIS trilogy. This is a mildly fictionalized telling of the end of Bishop James Pike's life. Probably the most straight forward book Dick ever wrote, it is a dark meditation on what happens to us when we lose the ones we love.
