This was a dazzling book. Amitav Ghosh has gone to great ends to portray a vivid group of lascars, Indians of different castes, and European and American seafarers. I loved the playfulness of the language and the extensive chrestomathy is evidence of the author's background in not just several Indian languages, but various pidgin and colonial dialects, and then the nearly impenetrable but Melvillean language of the 19th century Indian Ocean seafarers. I love it when an author takes me to a time and place I'd not much considered and makes me care so deeply about a place. Terrific writing and complex, memorable characters and beautifully constructed plot.
