I need to gather my thoughts on this book. I will just say that when I finish late last night, two things immediately came to me. The first was : OH MY GOSH! AMAZING BOOK! The second was: Wow, this is so disappointing after The Dust of 100 Dogs. It kinda felt like my favourite b-movie director went and made a high-budget mainstream film... a cop out. Review to come.
Wow. Nothing to say about this book but BLAND. I couldn't get get past the first chapter, and believe me, I really wanted to like this book. Please don't waste your money on this.
This was one of those books that was a bit of challenge to get through, but now that I've finished it, I can't stop thinking about it. The smart and self aware voices given to the two narrators almost mask their humanity - but, when the book ends, you realize that they were the most ordinary of people in the sense that they had teenage-sized angst and adult-sized loneliness and insecurity. I guess that's the point - the trappings of culture and good taste, be it books or movies or classy furnishings, can't always mask your inner self. Or...maybe I'm missing the whole thing, because they were times during the philosophical digressions of the book that I checked out a bit.
Obama is just a gifted writer. I am amazed at people who are as multi-faceted as he is. I have hope that our country may one day have a competent leader who actually traveled outside of the country by choice... and has experience with grass (roots movements) than just smoking it.
: prequel in the wheel of time saga, has sucked me in and am excited to delve deeper into the world robert jordan has created. highly recommended.
Fantastic, yet heart wrenching book.
