One of the most original Sci-fi books I've read in a long time. A story about a whole other world. A world in which scientific study is removed from humanity in a monastic setting. I haven't had so much fun thinking about my world and why it is the way it is in a long time, not to mention wondering just where we could be with scientific advancement if in our world science was practiced by researchers with the diligence of a religion. Its hard to try and sum up a Neal Stephenson book, and this one is no exception. Science Monks who face superstitious prejudice/bigotry, Alien Visitors, Alternate dimensions, the nature of reality and any given universe, family relationships, information technology, and many many many things more make up the content of this book. All while trying to grasp bits of alien language and their exact meaning from context. I felt like I was learning while reading this book, and that was awsome. Truly, this is just about the most unusually interesting and highly readable book I've read in a while. Particularly on the subject of science monks and alternate dimensions. Check it out, it will make you think.
