JCO seemed to take every horrible thing that a family can do to each other and place them all in these short stories - everything from incest, murder, drug abuse, alcoholism - and even a little cloning thrown in for good measure. Definitely dark and twisty but not my favorite of hers.
First off, with Wurtzel, it's best to read them in order. They play off, and reference events pretaning to the release of the other books. Prozac Nation is her first, and possibly best. While I love the antics of "Bitch" and truthfulness of adult rants in "More, Now, Again"-- Prozac Nation captures in a cloud of clarity the ideas of fear, control, depression, and the idea of a resolution (note: not a solution, or a fix, but a hopeful resolution to that phase in her life).
I don't feel comfortable giving this book a star rating but this is my full review: http://www.noseinabook.co.uk/?p=1057
Great book! I wish that I had read books like this in my youth. I might have enjoyed reading more. I'm hopeful that Greta and Marta will enjoy this book. This book had such heartfelt characters with wonderful values and qualities about them. I do however wish that some books were "happier" rather than such dramatic life events, but I guess that's what makes a good book and gives us all something to think about as we grow and develop into adulthood and throughout.
