I wanted so much to like this book, but I JUST couldn't get into it. It felt forced to me, like being hit over the head with historical slang, costume, and reference. Now, let's be honest, the problem could lay entirely with my own modern sensibilities. But considering how much I enjoy Victorian London, the theater and young female protagonists...well, it can't be ALL my fault.
This is a seriously long book, and every time I reread it, Penman's style kind of bugs me for the first hundred pages and then I just love it. I finish it, put it down, cry, go look up the Richard II Society, and generally wish there'd been more of it to read.
Stephen King's first, and possibly shortest, novel. The character development is decent. This novel is especially horrifying if you remember what it's like to be a teenage girl. Carrie is so isolated and lonely - just looking to fit in, and the kids at her high school are so unutterably cruel to her...however, they get their just desserts and then some.
I named my cat Fern because I love this book so much. It's the best of children's literature.
