I loved Gentlemen and Players by Harris and expected this to be similar. In some ways it is with a complex plot operating on two time frames, during WWII and present. But it was hard to find a character I liked or could root for. Framboise, the main character, had been a fairly savage child and, although Harris lets you know how hard her early family years were, Framboise remains prickly and unlikeable even as a 60+ woman unraveling the family mystery through her mother's odd cookbook. It's certainly atmospheric and gives a feeling of what it might have been like to be a child in occupied France.
A wonderful book for all animal lovers! I literally laughed and cried as I read this book.
