Maybe the best so far. Another one-off tale set in central Africa, it has the intrigue of making a great modern archeological discovery followed by a parallel story as that discovery becomes the scene of an historical creation in which the main characters become alive once more. Historical fiction at its best.
This is one of the best Peter Wimsey stories. The setting, the characters, the complicated plot--all come together beautifully. And of course, the bells. The fascinating, arcane, baffling world of change ringing. This is the third time I've read this book and it still doesn't make much sense to me (much like cricket), but I love the total English-ness of it. Great comfort read.
A vivid depiction of Europe after the war when ex-pats Hadley Richardson and Ernest Hemmingway, meet and marry. Their globe trotting and boozing aside, this is the story of a young woman trying to find her way in marriage and in life.
